BIOGRAPHY
Ann Cherry, BMus, Hon FTCL, Hon FLCM, ARAM, began her performing career at the age of fifteen, before beginning her formal flute study with the renowned William Kincaid. After his death, she continued her studies with Maurice Sharp, Murray Panitz, Severino Gazzelloni and Derek Honner. Competitions she has won include the Westmorland Series, the Young Artists and Twentieth Century Music Series and the ISM/Nat West "Festival".
In addition to the Bachelor of Music (cum laude) degree and the honorary diplomas awarded to Ann by Trinity College of Music and the London College of Music, Ann holds the Certificate of Merit from the Academia Chigiana, Siena, Italy, and the Recital Diploma (with Distinction) from the Royal Academy of Music.
Ann played for two seasons with the Birmingham, Alabama, Symphony, and she was solo flautist with the New York and Virginia State Symphony Orchestras. She played with the Birmingham-Southern Wind Quintet (USA) and the avant-garde chamber groups Forum Players (Rome) and Lysis (London). Ann has given concerts and broadcast on radio and television throughout Europe and Great Britain, including a concert performance on the Arts Channel, pan-European satellite TV. In 1991 Ann founded the Academia Wind Ensemble, a woodwind-based quintet, sometimes including piano or other instruments, which is composed of some of England’s finest musicians. She has played in many important venues throughout England.
Recordings include works by Poulenc, Martinu, Lutyens; "The Pied Piper" with Richard Baker; and "The Beethoven Connection", Romantic works for flute, ’cello and piano. In the pipeline: a CD of twentieth century works for flute and guitar, and a CD with Flûtes d’Accordes.
Ann has a busy career as writer, editor and arranger. Her arrangement of Bach’s Flute Sonata in G Minor for three flutes was published in 1998, and her arrangement of Bach’s Eb Major Sonata, also for three flutes, will appear soon (Paul Rodriguez Music, Ltd.). Kevin Mayhew Publishers have issued "The French Influence", Ann’s edition of French-related show pieces for flute. Volume 1 appeared in 1998, and Volume 2 is due to appear in 1999.
Ann is a Senior Lecturer in flute at Trinity College of Music and is Co-ordinator of Wind, Brass and Percussion at Trinity College of Music Junior Department. She is also a Mentor for the newly created Certificate of Teaching offered by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Ann is currently Secretary of the British Flute Society, a music critic for "Music Teacher" magazine, and is an adjudicator at many festivals and competitions.
